Travel by bus
The internal bus service in Croatia is excellent, with even the smallest towns and villages having a certain bus connection. Every town has a central bus station (in Croatian: "Autobusna stanica") where you can buy tickets and find bus timetables. Croatian buses are comfortable and reliable. Luggage is stowed in the hold beneath the bus and there is a charge per item.

Travel by train
The train service in Croatia is still developing and is far from extensive. However, Zagreb is the hub from which most trains leave. The large cities are not all linked by train as the system was designed in the 19th century to link Croatia with its neighboring countries. Trains are slower and less frequent than buses but are a bit cheaper. There are no trains running along the coast and only a few coastal cities are linked to Zagreb. Domestic trains are either express or passenger (local). The express trains have smoking or non-smoking carriages that consist of 1st and 2nd class. The overnight train between Zagreb and Split offers sleeping cars. Baggage is carried on trains free of charge and most stations have a left luggage service.
